Transfer News: Toby Alderweireld insists he is focussed on Tottenham
Toby Alderweireld says his focus is purely on Tottenham as the countdown on his £25m escape clause continues to tick.
The Belgian defender can leave the club for the set figure before Thursday – coincidentally the same day Spurs play Manchester United in Shanghai.
He says he is trying to put the uncertainty to the back of his mind but admitted that things can change quickly.
Toby Alderweireld says his focus is purely on Tottenham despite uncertainty over his future
Alderweireld, once a target for United, had a contract that was due to expire this summer. Tottenham triggered an extension clause for a further year which included the release clause.
When asked if he saw himself in a Spurs shirt on the first day of the season, the 30-year-old responded: ‘Yes. That’s my focus. In football everything can go quick but all I’m doing is focusing on Spurs and being fit for the start of the season.’
Alderweireld, who impressed for Mauricio Pochettino’s side last year, was named captain in Sunday’s 3-2 friendly victory over Juventus in Singapore.
‘I think the manager knows I am committed to the club and the team but you never know in football,’ he added.

‘A game like Sunday I was captain – so that shows the manager has trust in me and I’m showing the right attitude.’
Alderweireld has admirers in England and abroad, although Roma are struggling to match the release clause.
The defender, however, is keeping his head down. ‘I want to say one thing,’ he added. ‘My focus is on Spurs and I try to deliver the job I need to do – I’m happy and that’s it. In my head I will be playing for Spurs.’
