Reading sack manager Jose Gomes with club languishing in relegation zone

Reading have sacked manager Jose Gomes with the club languishing in the Championship relegation zone.

The Portuguese, appointed shortly before Christmas last year, successfully steered the Royals away from the drop and to the safety of 20th place last season.

But a terrible start to the current campaign that has seen them win just two of their opening 11 league matches has seen Gomes pay with his job.

A statement released by the club on Wednesday afternoon read: ‘Owner Mr Yongge Dai has made the difficult decision to part company with Gomes and make a change at first team level.

‘We would like to sincerely thank Jose for his hard work during his tenure as manager at Reading Football Club and we wish him the very best of luck in his future career.’

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Bristol City at Ashton Gate proved to be Gomes’ final match in charge with their last league victory coming at the end of August.
